FishEyeQ

How can artificial intelligence and advanced sensor technology contribute to a more efficient and sustainable fishing industry? That is the central question within FishEyeQ, an innovative project focused on the automatic recognition, sorting and quality assessment of fish.
Duration
Sep 2026 - Aug 2029
Type
Intercluster project

In the fisheries sector, quality inspections and the recording of biological data during fish landings are still largely carried out manually today. This takes a great deal of time and makes it difficult to quickly obtain a complete and accurate picture of the catch.

The partners in the FishEyeQ project aim to automate this process using real-time computer vision, artificial intelligence and smart sensor technology. This will create a more objective, faster and more accurate system for quality control and data collection.

From fish auction to sustainable fisheries management

Within the project, the partners are developing a proof of concept for the automatic separation, positioning and inspection of different fish species. The system must not only recognise and assess fish, but also record biological characteristics and link them to existing fisheries data.

This combination offers significant benefits across the entire value chain. Fish processing companies gain access to more efficient quality control, while researchers and policymakers can rely on more detailed and reliable data. This creates new opportunities for data-driven and more sustainable fisheries management.

Added value for the blue conomy

By automating quality control and data collection, FishEyeQ contributes to more efficient fish processing and better-informed fisheries management. The project creates opportunities for technology developers, supports innovation in the food industry and provides more accurate data for research and policymaking.

Role of Blue Cluster

Together with Flanders' FOOD, Blue Cluster supports the dissemination of knowledge and the valorisation of the project results.

Join the Industrial Advisory Board

Companies can still apply to join the Industrial Advisory Board (IAB) of this project. As an IAB member, you will gain early insight into the project results, engage directly with the research team and help shape future valorisation pathways.
