Italy and Belgium strengthen cooperation during Industrial Day 2026
How can we build a stronger European ecosystem for maritime security, underwater technologies, and the blue economy? During the Italy-Belgium Industrial Day 2026 in Ostend, Belgian and Italian stakeholders came together to address that question. Under the theme "Beyond the Surface: The Future of Underwater", one objective took centre stage: fostering sustainable international collaborations around innovative underwater technologies.
Both Italy and Belgium have a strong industrial and technological foundation within the maritime ecosystem. By bringing together expertise from both countries, the initiative aims to stimulate new projects, innovation partnerships, and opportunities for European cooperation.
High-Level Speakers
The day opened with a plenary session featuring an impressive line-up of speakers. Following welcome remarks by Blue Cluster, the City of Ostend, the Italian Embassy, and the Italian Trade Agency, participants gained valuable insights into both the Belgian and Italian maritime and defence landscapes.
Among the keynote speakers were admiral Carl Gillis, head of international relations of the Belgian Navy, and admiral Giulio Marino Cappelletti, director of the Operational Structure of the Italian national underwater hub. They shared their perspectives on the strategic challenges and opportunities surrounding underwater infrastructure, maritime security, and innovation. Their contributions highlighted the growing importance of international cooperation in the protection and development of critical maritime infrastructure.
Matchmaking as a Catalyst for Future Collaboration
The highlight of the day was an extensive matchmaking session. Italian companies active in areas such as autonomous systems, maritime security, offshore engineering, sensor technology, and cybersecurity engaged with carefully selected Belgian organizations.
The discussions brought together complementary strengths around topics including underwater vehicles, the protection of critical maritime infrastructure, offshore energy, seabed monitoring, artificial intelligence, and maritime digitalisation. Several areas of common interest were identified, and initial opportunities for future collaboration were explored.
For Blue Cluster, this approach is an important lever for connecting Flemish companies with international innovation partners and creating new opportunities for joint research, development, and demonstration projects.
A Glimpse into the Future
Following the B2B meetings, the delegation visited the Flanders Marine Institute (VLIZ). During a guided tour of the Marine Robotics Centre, participants gained firsthand insight into the advanced research and testing facilities Flanders uses to develop marine robotics and underwater technologies.
The visit provided an inspiring conclusion to a day that brought together innovation, industry, and international collaboration. At the same time, it offered a tangible demonstration of the expertise present in Flanders: one that is attracting growing international attention.
Towards a long-term partnership
The Italy-Belgium Industrial Day marked the starting point of a broader Belgian-Italian collaboration in the fields of underwater technologies and maritime innovation. By combining strategic insights, knowledge exchange, and targeted matchmaking, the event brought together companies, research institutions, and other stakeholders around shared challenges and opportunities. In doing so, it laid the foundations for new collaborations and future innovation projects.
