More than 400 participants attend first Flemish Defence Innovation Day
Europe is set to invest significantly more in security and defence in the coming years. This also creates opportunities for Flemish businesses and research organisations active in areas such as artificial intelligence, autonomous systems, drones, sensor technology and cybersecurity.
From technological expertise to practical applications
During DIF-Day, representatives from Defence outlined the technologies and capabilities it needs today and will require in the future. Ukrainian speakers also shared their experiences of deploying and developing new technologies in an operational context.
The European defence market and the opportunities it offers Flemish businesses were also discussed. Representatives from organisations including the European Commission and the European Defence Agency provided further insight into European funding, cooperation programmes and opportunities to connect with larger defence companies.
Flemish strategy
DIF-Day is part of the Flemish Innovation and Industrial Strategy for Security and Defence (VISD). The Flemish Government is providing an additional €135 million during the current legislative term to support innovation in security and defence and help turn technological expertise into practical applications more quickly.
The first DIF-Day was organised by the Department of Work, Economy, Science, Innovation and Social Economy (WEWIS).
Blue Cluster's role
As part of VISD, Blue Cluster co-manages the maritime programme and is a member of the organising committee. During DIF-Day, we organised the breakout session on maritime security and innovation together with the Belgian Navy, the Agency for Maritime and Coastal Services, Elia and Port of Antwerp-Bruges.
